Alpine newts are fascinating and in the wild have adapted to very cold conditions; they have not been studied much in the wild, and deserve more attention and conservation efforts. Those I kept in refrigerated exhibits at the Bronx Zoo proved very hardy. however, keeping them at home was more difficult, as they are stressed by temps over 70 F. I used an aquarium chiller, and cool basements have proven useful as well.
